Production Process
Essentially, the production of ceramics follows a seven steps process.
1. Selection
The clay material is generally obtained locally. When fired it changes to a brown colour (typical of Deruta) but other variations are possible (see www.derutanews.it issue 2)
2. Preparation
Sometimes different clays may need to be mixed together depending what sort of result we want (See www.derutanews.it issue2)
3. Moulding
This is hand made. Special skills and experience is required. The best workers may go through ten years of training before being fully ready to shape clay. It is quite fun to try. Ask the shop owner to visit his production unit and have a go at the wheel !
4. Drying up
The moulded object is put to dry.
5. Firing
Once dryed, the object is put into the oven to cook. The first firing is carried out at a temperature of just below 1000 degrees centigrades.
6. Decoration and Glazing
The object is decorated following a bath into a chalky liquid. When this liquid dries up it becomes a white paste upon which it is possible to draw.It is then glazed ready to be cooked again
7. Final cooking
This process brings up the colours (which change during cooking), and firms the glaze over the decoration. Final cooking is done at temperatures less than 1200 degrees centigrades.
In its second version, Art1st.net will make available an electronic film to show the full production process.
